The Institute of Physical Chemistry conducts research in the field of (high-pressure) hydrogen storage materials. The aim of the project is to develop new hydrogen storage materials based on the fundamental understanding of complex metal hydrides. A particular focus will be on materials whose equilibrium pressure is above 200 bar.

The working group of Prof. Mertens is centrally concerned with material-related issues in the context of energy storage and conversion. The main topics are hydrogen storage, catalytic hydrogenation for energy storage and porous media. The material systems at the center of research are metal hydrides, transition metal catalysts and metal-organic frameworks (MOF).
